| Addiction is an extremely devious
disease, which can take on any number of different forms and
symptoms. Some consider addiction the disease that tells people
who suffer from it that they do not have it. Unlike illnesses
such as cancer, addiction not only hurts the sufferer but also
anyone that the sufferer comes into contact with. It is possible
that there are genetic links to addiction, meaning some people
have the predisposition to addiction because people in their
family have suffered from it also. Others believe that addiction
comes from a chemical imbalance within a person’s brain.
This imbalance may be inherent in a person’s nature or
it may be caused as a result of prolonged drug use or other
traumatic experiences. People with preexisting mental illness
are also prone to addiction because of the already occurring
imbalance in their brain. Often times people who struggle with
illness like the effects that drugs have on the way they think
and feel. In still other cases, addiction may be the result
of traumatizing experiences or crises. Many people turn to drugs
and alcohol as coping mechanisms and find that they cannot stop
once they have started. If all of these factors are present,
chances of drug addiction are extremely high. Drug addiction
is most commonly treated successfully by addiction specialists
in safe rehabilitation environments. |
